The Farrier's Open Forum & Idea Exchange Spring 1997 * Issue #7 Welcome to the Forum! It's beginning to warm up a bit in the Southeast, and soon we shoers will be dripping sweat, cussing flies, and racing to keep up with the backlog of work that'll hit when the trails dry out enough to ride on and shoes go back onto all the horses that are slogging barefoot in the mud today. Not that many of the SHOE boys haven't been busy... Marcus and Jeff have been getting ready for the first Guild National Convention, which is coming up fast. Yours truly represented the Guild at the Bluegrass Laminitis Symposium in January. 1997 is shaping up to be a big year for the farrier and horse industries, and SHOE can help make our region a prime mover. ~~~~~ Area Horseowners! The Union County Young Riders 4-H Club will be hosting the Saddle Up for St. Jude Trail Ride again this Spring. The Ride will be held on March 15 with a rain date of the 16th. All proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children's Hospital. Please contact Mrs. Debbie Barham at (704)882-3699 for further details and pledge forms. Last year over 100 people participated and over $9,700 was raised. This year we hope to exceed $10,000. Come spend an enjoyable day trail riding and help St. Jude's in the process. Everything was just great. Next year I hope we can go back there again. Our sponsors did a real fine job also. The sponsors this year were: Bio-Zin Mobile Milling Woof-n-Hoof Pierce Farrier Supply Rusty Spur Saddlery Mint Hill Animal Clinic Greenock Farm Animal Hospital Southern States We had over fifty people attend the Banquet this year, and Robert Rhyne of Purina was our keynote speaker. Thanks to Rob Edwards and Mimi Clark, everyone at the Banquet got a copy of ANVIL Magazine. Our very own Dave Millwater won the SHOE Southern States Journalism award. Some may recall that Dave also won the first BWFA Journalism Award in 1992. Kevin Fahey won the Pierce Farrier Supply Lifetime Achievement Award. The SHOE Board of Directors also gave Jeff & Debi Crane special awards for all their hard work. Thanks to all the sponsors and folks who came to the event, and we hope to see y'all again next year.
